For the past three years, I've had the joy of photographing a local fundraising event that's as charming as it is quirky. There are the usual stalls and food stands, but the real highlights are the three-legged race through the village pond, up a surprisingly steep hill, and back again, plus the duck races where rubber ducks get pushed across the pond by the local fire department's hoses. The adults tackle the full course in fancy dress while spectators lob water balloons at them. The little ones take a shorter loop around the pond, but both groups deliver plenty of laughs. There's also a lovely dog show put on by the local animal shelter.
There's something special about English village fundraisers. They're equal parts tradition, humour, and community spirit. Photographing them reminds me that the best moments aren't always polished. Muddy trainers, soaked costumes, determined faces, and bursts of laughter tell the real story. That's where the magic actually lives.
These events are about families creating memories together. Kids cheering on their parents in ridiculous costumes while flinging water balloons, neighbours helping neighbours up the hill, siblings competing alongside each other. It's messy and unscripted, which is exactly why it matters. Years from now, these photos will remind people not just of what happened, but of how it felt to be part of something together.
That's what community and family photography does. It doesn't create aspirational visions. It preserves a record of your people, doing what you actually do together. Every village has its quirks and traditions, and photographing them becomes part of the community's visual history.
Whether it's a carefully posed family portrait or a mud-and-water-balloon-splattered race through the pond in fancy dress, the aim is the same: to celebrate and preserve the moments that matter.
