A Little Christmas Magic at the Village Fair: My Pop-Up Studio Experience

Last weekend, I set up my first pop-up studio at our small indoor Christmas village fair. I went in with a mix of excitement and nerves, not quite sure how it would all play out, but it felt like the right moment to take another step back into photography.

I set up my studio on the stage, which made the whole thing feel both amusing and oddly official. I set up a simple backdrop, and soft lights. Nothing fancy, just enough to create a cosy space where families could feel comfortable.

Once things started, the day took on a lovely rhythm. Parents came up with little ones in jumpers that lit up, teenagers tried their best to look cool while still enjoying themselves, and grandparents should be receiving some lovely photos on Christmas morning. Everyone seemed open to the moment, helped along by that familiar December excitement that makes people a bit more cheerful and a bit more patient.

As the afternoon went on, my nerves faded. I found myself settling into the flow, remembering how much I enjoy capturing those small, genuine expressions that appear when people relax. It reminded me of one of the reasons why I fell in love with photography in the first place. There is something special about giving people a tiny slice of memory to keep.

Packing down at the end, I felt pleased in a simple, honest way. This wasn’t a big job or a polished fashion shoot. It was a small community fair, an indoor stage and a bunch of colourful jumpers. But it mattered. It helped me reconnect with the craft and with the people around me.

I’m already looking forward to doing it again.
